Free Aerobic Classes - Chiang Mai Municipality is teaching aerobic classes free of charge. Monday through Friday at the old municipality sports stadium (gym 2) between 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.

All you expats out there who are looking for a chance to brush up on your basic business skills without entering a full-blown MBA program – where to go? Payap University has decided to open its Business Fundamentals course to the business community in Chiang Mai. The Business Fundamentals course is actually a prelude to the International MBA program for those students who lack a strong business background. Payap University has now decided to allow business professionals and owners to enroll in this course without continuing into the International MBA program. The course is a series of short classes on Principles of Management, Economics, Accounting, Finance, and Marketing for a total of 42 hours of instruction. The class is all day Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting on March 21 and ending on June 1. So, if you own a business that’s in need of a slight adjustment in the ratio of cost to profit, maybe this course is for you. The Chiang Mai Arts and Culture Festival will be held April 4 to 9, just before the Songkran Festival. This program is being organized by the Tourist Authority of Thailand, Northern Region, together with Chiang Mai Municipality, Chiang Mai University Art and Culture Promotion Office, and Wat Pa Pao. “Poy Sang Long”, a tradition originating in Mae Hong Son, is the name of the festivity which will be held at Wat Pa Pao April 4-6, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Along with the traditional art festivities being held from April 4-9 at Art and Culture Promotion Office, Chiang Mai University (located on the right hand side of Irrigation Road, and in front of Kad Ton Phayom), there are going to be Lanna traditional musical displays, dance performances, and a puppet show. Gongdee Gallery and Studio will organize a painting exhibition by Wichit Chaiwong, the owner of Gongdee Company Limited, at Gongdee Art Room, which is located on Soi 1, Nimmanheminda Road. The exhibition will open on April 1 and last until April 28. Please note that the exhibition will be closed during the Songkran Festival celebrations.

The Paris Mozart Trio represents a new generation of chamber music Sunday 6 April at 19.00 p.m. at AUA Chiang Mai, 24 Rajdamnern Road. Tune-in to the English language radio program ‘Helping Hand’, broadcast daily from 7.30-9.00 pm. The program can be heard on Radio Thailand Chiang Mai FM 93.25 MHZ, and provides useful information to both Thai nationals and foreigners alike.

For the kids

The Humanities Faculty, Chiang Mai University, is holding an International CMU Summer Camp 2003, which is being scheduled during the summer semester. There are 4 classes in the camp, with the first a Culture Tour experiencing cultural eco-tourism, the second is English@it.com using an English language program in computers and mobile phones. The third covers Communication, developing conversational skills, and finally there is Presentation, showing how to creatively present information. The dates for the classes are as follows: English@it.com, Communication and Presentation are ten days each and will be held on March 31 - April 11, April 17-30, and May 2 -10. The enrolment fee for the first class is 3,500 baht and for the other classes are 2,400 baht. Mark your calendars for the best family entertainment of the year: Bangkok Community Theatre’s presentation of the hit family musical “Annie”. Bangkok Community Theatre (BCT) will stage “Annie” at the Bangkok Playhouse on Petchburi Road on March 29 at 7:30 p.m. and March 29 and 30, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets at B550 for adults and B350 for students and children for all four performances will be available at CD Warehouse in the Emporium on Sukhumvit Road from mid-March. “Annie” has been described as the perfect family musical. It first opened on Broadway in November 1977 and won 7 Tony Awards including the award for Best Musical. A film of the musical was made in 1982 which was followed by a Disney remake in 1999. With wonderfully uplifting songs and dances, this is a true “feel good” show. In the words of “Annie’s” creator: “Those who come to see the show go away with a sense of optimism, a sense of hope and joy and love. I think that is why it is a success.” That kind of optimism from a little orphan girl as she hugs her dog and tells us “The sun will come out tomorrow” is just the kind of uplifting entertainment families need this spring. This local production boasts 48 adult performers, 10 kids and a dog! Don’t miss it!
