The well known restaurant‚ Le Coq d’Or’ in Chiang Mai offers new light summer lunch menus, starting at only 390 baht ++ for a 4-course menu plus coffee or tea. So next time you feel like dining in a most elegant, yet relaxed, setting, take your business partners or family there. Are you pining for some homemade breakfast before hitting the town? Or maybe a light lunch? Stop in at Petri’s, a small neighborhood restaurant, opposite Kad Suan Kaew. Toast, homemade pita bread, juice, butter, jam, coffee as much as you like plus a big selection of breakfast items to choose from. Like Swedish potato pancakes with bacon or an omelet with cream stuffing of shrimp, ham, bacon or mushroom. All served for only 95 baht.

La Gondola Restaurant, located at the Riverside Garden of Rimping Condo (next to Nakornping Bridge), now features a Weekend Pasta Buffet at 189 baht (children 129 baht), every Saturday and Sunday from noon until 3 p.m. Phone 0 5323 5942 for reservations.

Sunday Brunch is back! By popular demand, the Amari Rincome Hotel has re-introduced the famous Sunday Brunch, which is now more deliciously tempting than ever before. From now until October 2003, La Veranda French Restaurant introduces a delicious hot summer season menu, with prices starting at B. 290 per person. With over 20 years French gastronomie experience, Chef Gilles Polteuin offers 6 new menus with an emphasis on quality and health - all fruit and vegetables from Royal Project farms. The latest addition is Doi-Kham trout filet with Riesling white wine sauce, and filets of catfish Grenobloise style. The chef also recommends his iced mango soufflé. Environmental education for free! Chiang Mai University’s Forest Restoration Research Unit is pleased to announce that its new education program can provide free training and extension services to schools and other community groups in forestry and other environmental issues. Discover biodiversity along a forest trail, learn how to grow trees at our nurseries or join a tree planting day. Classroom events or field workshops; 1/2 day to 3 day programs to suit your needs. Free Aerobic Classes - Chiang Mai Municipality is teaching aerobic classes free of charge. Monday through Friday at the old municipality sports stadium (gym 2) between 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Events

On Wednesday, May 28, the Chiang Mai German Brewery, located next to Carrefour Supermarket, will present Carabao live in concert. Tickets cost 150 baht per person. For reservations call 053 244 588.

Hair Festival in the Northern Region is being organized by the Beauty Culture Association of Thailand on May 28, at Ban Lan Tong Room, Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel, Chiang Mai. During the festival, there will be a fashion show and hairdressing show by both Thai hairdressing champions and foreign hairdressers. Additionally, hairdressing and make-up competitions will be arranged, including male and female freestyle hairdressing, night party hair-bun style and making up the bride’s face.

The Exhibition "Under the House" by local Chiang Mai artist Niwat Kosal can be visited at Gong Dee Studio, Soi 1 Nimmanhaemin Rd until May 28. The exhibition is mainly focused on bright, serene and warm acrylic paintings on canvas, all to do with the former resting area of a house, where activities were conducted together with neighbors.

The black and white photographs exhibition "At that Moment" by Phum Naritchart and Utaiwan Boonloi can be visited at Gong Dee Gallery between June 1-28. The exhibition is under the concept of memorizing experiences & things along the journeys of different people, places, and time. The opening ceremony will be held on June 1 at 6.30 p.m. Gong Dee Gallery is on Soi 1, Nimanhaemin Road.

Bagan and beyond - the photographic exhibition takes place until 31 July 2003 at ‘A Gallery’ in Soi 1 Nimmanhaemmin Rd, opposite Gong Dee Gallery. Visit the exhibition for free, and let the photographer Angela Srisomwongwathana share the sheer excitement of taking pictures with you.

Looking for a wheelchair? Hopefully not! But many poor disabled children in Chiangmai are. So why not donate one for only 7000 baht? Visit the Freedom Wheelchair Workshop across from the Chiangmai Disabled Center, 133/1 Rajapakinai Road, Chiang Mai (near Thapae Gate).

Tune-in to the English language radio program ‘Helping Hand’, broadcast daily from 7.30-9.00 pm. The program can be heard on Radio Thailand Chiang Mai FM 93.25 MHZ, and provides useful information to both Thai nationals and foreigners alike.

For the kids

A Toys Library has been opened for Chiang Mai children at the Northern Child Development Center behind the Nakhon Ping Hospital. It is supported by the Japanese Government and the Japan Small Scale-Grant Assistance (SSGA). This library is designed to encourage childhood development and be a learning source which can provide equipment to support that aim. Activities at the Toys Library include lending and return service, instruction and demonstration of equipment and skill testing. The Toys Library also helps parents by selling the products made by those participating in the center’s vocational project to increase local families’ incomes. The Toys Library now has 63 members. Anyone can become a subscriber by paying a 100 baht annual fee. The equipment provided includes local natural product toys made from clay, bamboo, and coconut shell as well as plastic and metal toys. The library is open daily from 9 a.m. - 4.30 p.m. except weekends. Interested people who want to subscribe for this training or become a member can contact 0-5389-0238-44 ext. 3210. The Northern Child Development Center Chiang Mai is located at 196 Moo 4 Tambon Donkaew, Mae Rim District.
