The new ‘Chiang Mai Spa Society’ is looking for members. Their aim is to make Chiang Mai the “Wellness Capital of Asia”. The Spa society is supported by the Ministry of Public Health and Chiang Mai Public Health office. To become a member your field and interest should be from one of the following categories: health service (spas & long stay lodgings); health products (herbal products) or medical service (private hospitals). The Spa Society would like to set up standards for spas and support tourism - regarding spas - in northern Thailand. Dining

The well known restaurant‚ Le Coq d’Or’ in Chiang Mai offers new light summer lunch menus, starting at only 390 baht ++ for a 4-course menu plus coffee or tea. Are you pining for some homemade breakfast before hitting the town? Or maybe a light lunch? Stop in at Petri’s, a small neighborhood restaurant, opposite Kad Suan Kaew. Toast, homemade pita bread, juice, butter, jam, coffee as much as you like plus a big selection of breakfast items to choose from. Like Swedish potato pancakes with bacon or an omelet with cream stuffing of shrimp, ham, bacon or mushroom. All served for only 95 baht.

La Gondola Restaurant, located at the Riverside Garden of Rimping Condo (next to Nakornping Bridge), now features a Weekend Pasta Buffet at 189 baht (children 129 baht), every Saturday and Sunday from noon until 3 p.m. Phone 053 235 942 for reservations.

Education

Childbirth Preparation Classes - Especially for first time parents who are interested in the Bradley method, Juanita Duong, Diane Smith and Lori Rowe work together to teach a series of two 2-hour classes that will help prepare a couple for the birth of their baby. After the birth, one of these nurses will also do a follow-up visit to answer any newborn questions as well as assist with breast-feeding if needed. Environmental education for free! Chiang Mai University’s Forest Restoration Research Unit is pleased to announce that its new education program can provide free training and extension services to schools and other community groups in forestry and other environmental issues. Discover biodiversity along a forest trail, learn how to grow trees at our nurseries or join a tree planting day. Classroom events or field workshops; 1/2 day to 3 day programs to suit your needs. Free Aerobic Classes - Chiang Mai Municipality is teaching aerobic classes free of charge. Monday through Friday at the old municipality sports stadium (gym 2) between 5 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Entertainment

The last two days of the three-day contemporary piano music festival being presented by the Music Department at Payap University in honor of Payap’s 30th anniversary are happening Saturday and Sunday, September 27 and 28, at the AUA auditorium, Rajadamnern Road. The concerts are free and begin at 7:30 p.m. For more information call 053-248-037. Program for Saturday, September 27: Students, featuring music by Latin-American composers, such as Ginastera and Guastavino. Program for Sunday, September 28: Bennett Lerner plays ‘Music by my Friends’, a program of music by composers he knows, or has known, personally, from Aaron Copland to young Thai composer Narong Prangcharoen, Payap professor Thorsten Wollmann, well-known American composers, and Donald Richie (world-famous authority on Japanese film).

Saturday jazz at the Amari Rincome Hotel - each Saturday at 6.30-10.00 p.m., La Gritta Restaurant at the Amari Rincome Hotel, Chiang Mai arranges a live jazz performance by Daeng Fantastic team of four. Listen to jazz favorites down the years, and enjoy a specialty theme buffet created by expert chef, Adrian O’Herlihy. Bring along family or friends.

Events

This weekend, Saturday and Sunday, September 27 & 28, the 7th Family Fun Rally from Amari Rincome Hotel to Anghang Nature Resort will be held. A great weekend of fun for the whole family including games, activities and a prize for the winner presented by HSH Prince Bhisadej Rajanee. The cost of 3,490 baht net for two persons includes one night’s accommodation at the Anghang Nature Resort for 2 people, plus breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack. American Voices presents CoCo York and the Mike Del Ferro Trio in Bel Canto, an exceptional concert of Jazz and Blues on Friday October 3rd at 19:30 at the Grand Nanta Ballroom, the Westin Hotel, Chiang Mai. The concert, sponsored by Philip Morris Thailand with additional support from KLM and the Westin Hotel, will feature the acclaimed Blues singer, CoCo York, in ‘Mississippi Blues Night’ and the equally renowned Mike Del Ferro Trio in ‘Belcanto’. A land and house fair and auction, part of a joint project between Siam Commercial Bank Co., Ltd. (Public) and Legal Execution Department, Chiang Mai will be held once more this year: Oct 25 at Lotus Pang Suan Kaew Hotel. Confiscated properties will be auctioned and special interests in personal loans will be offered to bidders.
