Interesting story on Wat Fa Wiang In from the Chiangmai Mail. It is
sad and regretful, however, that the Chiangmai Mail adds insult to
injury to calling us Tai (Shan) – Burmese. The Ukranians do not like to be
called Russian; the Scot, Welsh and Irish hate to be called English; and I
am sure the Thai Yai (Shan) do not love to be called “Pahmah”.
Incidentally, a Chinese from Burma, who eventually
settled in Vancouver, B.C. Canada, via Thailand - once said to my mother,
“You know, the Thais are very rude. They call us who are from Burma
‘pah-mah’ which in Burmese as one knows - means prostitute!”
