Won’t be going to Phuket this year

Dear Editor,

With respect to Andrew J Wood, general manager, Chaophya Park Hotel & Resorts (Chiangmai Mail Vol IV No. 36 Sept 3 - 9 Travel and Tourism Section) there is a simple reason why overseas visitors are not returning to Phuket. I have complained before about the continuing high airfares, lack of incentives and the difficulty in trying to obtain a value for money deal which would encourage me to visit Phuket. Despite this, I made a decision to visit Phuket this month, but let me tell you what has just happened.

The resort was booked at AU$36 per night. Unfortunately, due to work commitments, I have now had to postpone my holiday to December/January. Whilst I understand it is high season, the same resort and same room per night will now be AU$99 (or US$76) with New Years Eve being an amazing AU$232 (US$178) for one night. Whilst I desperately want to show support for local business and help with the recovering economy, I have cancelled my trip.

I will instead return to my much loved Chiang Mai, for the sixth time, where value for money, authentic Lanna accommodation, superb scenery and charming people make it a truly outstanding international destination.
