2nd Annual Hillside Charity Roof Top Party

All expectations exceeded with over 766,000 baht raised!

When the sun set on Saturday, January 14, the rooftop on Hillside 4 was lit up and literally hundreds of festive people from all over Chiang Mai found their way there. Over 120,000 baht worth of raffle prizes, over 100,000 baht worth of live auctions items, and over 120,000 baht sponsored goods for the silent auction demonstrated the goodwill and dedication of Chiang Mai businesses when it comes to ‘giving back to the underprivileged’.

Roll the Dice

Chiang Mai business tycoon Wachara Tantranon had donated a huge buffet to feed over 400 people to ensure that the full price of the entrance tickets could go in the big pot, the T-shirts everybody received were generously paid for by Dr. Howard Graves and Guy Pace, the printed program had been paid for by the Thomas Jeffrey family, the entrance and raffle tickets paid for by Steve Yarnold, and the costumes for the helping hands were kindly supplied by Sakun Jan Lanna Design. A huge non-profit bar was set-up by Ester Ting and her helping hands from the River Ping Palace, and Mr. The’s Jazz band, the Wachirawit Thai Instrumental Band, the Wachi-rawit 40 piece band and the B.A.A. band all played for no fee to entertain the crowds.

The rooftop of Hillside Condominium 4 on Huay Keaw Road was laid out like a fair, with a ‘Roll the dice’ booth, a hot air balloon stand, and two colorful stages where multiple artists performed during the whole night.

Entertainment was guaranteed with booths where young and old could win and lose, play the Citylife fear factor, or take part in the heads or tail game where a small contribution made it possible again to win great prizes.

MC Michael Vogt from Chiangmai Mail told the visitors more than once that “tonight’s the night to drink for charity”, and when the evening progressed it became clear that many followed his suggestion.

A fantastic surprise came when Robin Otto from Futro-nix presented a cheque of 50,000 baht to Chiang Mai governor Suwat Tantipat, which was followed by a call by US Deputy Consul General Raymond Murphy that he would sponsor 75,000 baht but would bring it to 100,000 if one more individual or company would donate 25,000 baht more. And as the mood was good and generous, Roy Blom stepped forward and did just that. It was electrifying to watch and the applause was endless.

The money raised will be divided and support five different charities, depending on their needs and requirements. No cash will be given to individuals but it will pay for something they need. The five causes will be the Foundation for the Education of Rural Children (FERC), the Suan Dok Hospital for disabled people in Chiang Mai, the Baan Kingkaew Orphanage for the care of babies and small children from 0–5 years, abandoned by their mothers, the Down syndrome Center in Chiang Mai and Viengping Orphanage.

This evening was a cultural mix, a get-together of every nationality and exceeded the most hopeful dreams of any member of the organizing committee. The fantastic support of the community, its private individuals and businesses, is to be commended, and the event was bigger and better than anticipated. Will they hit a million next year?
