Uncollected motorbike taxes top 434 million baht

Police stations throughout Chiang Mai are overflowing with hundreds of motorcycles that have been impounded for traffic violations. The owners have refused to come and collect them forcing the police to assign guard duty round the clock.
Rather than impounding motorcycles, police have now turned to recording license plate numbers or confiscating driving licenses to solve the problem.
An incredible statistic revealed by the Chiang Mai Transport Department showed that 996,986 motorbikes in Chiang Mai have not paid their taxes. The amount due according to the officials at the transport office totals a staggering 434 million baht.
