Crime and smoking up, drinking and unemployment down

Crimes involving homicides, property and drugs have increased in this year’s second quarter, while the total amount of money spent on alcoholic drinks has declined in comparison to cigarettes which have risen, according to National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) secretary general Amphon Kitti-amphon.
Crimes involving murder and robbery or theft of property have risen from about 58,000 to 62,000 cases in this year’s second quarter while drug-related crimes had risen from about 28,000 to 33,000 cases. Child abuse cases had also risen by 12 per cent in the same period this year, he said.
Unemployment rates had dropped from 2.5 per cent to 1.6 per cent nationwide, though 4 per cent of all vocational college graduates and 3.2 per cent of all university graduates remained jobless during this year’s second quarter.
However, the amount of money spent on alcoholic beverages had slightly dropped from about Bt37 billion to Bt36 billion in this year’s second quarter, beginning from April until June. Smoking had slightly increased by less than two per cent during the same period.
Though the number of AIDS patients had dropped from about 27,000 to 14,000 over the past decade nationwide, the number of housewives with HIV had increased slightly from 4.8 per cent to 5.5 per cent during this year’s second quarter. TNA
