Ismail on fire as
Warriors topple City Life
Steve Potter
The first match of the New Year saw lots of excitement and good
cricket when the Warriors enjoyed a comfortable win over City Life at the
Gymkhana last Sunday with six overs to spare.
Batting first, City Life struggled to reach 142 with only Makki, a typical
swashbuckling 29, and Thong, with a controlled innings of defense and
aggression, scoring 57 not out, as the major scorers.
Ishmael, bowling with lively pace, took 3 City Life wickets for 19 with
left-armer Chris Simmons 2 for 17 and Noor, six overs for an economical 10
runs, lending good support.
Despite an early breakthrough, Warriors reached 146 for the loss of only 6
wickets with Ishmael scoring a delightful 67 not out and Shiffy 20.
The pick of the City Life bowlers was undoubtedly Nick Hanlon with 1/20 from
his six overs. Makki also bowled well without a great deal of good fortune
despite an early wicket.
There could be no doubt that Ishmael was unanimously declared ‘Man of the
Match’.
Umpire’s Report
What a difference to last week’s glut of runs. Today’s match
showed exactly why this game has been called “ the great leveller”. As
usual, I shall leave my MOM until the end, although this week there were not
as many candidates.
Early wickets in both innings ensured this was going to be a comparatively
low scoring game. The sight of stumps being hurtled towards fine leg is
always exhilarating, not just for the bowler. Equally , to see good field
positioning for the slower bowlers gives this writer satisfaction. Cricket
is the chess game of sport.
Now, I must mention Tong. He is rapidly maturing into a very good player.
Please bear in mind that this strong young man is about 16. To nurture his
formidable strength as a cricketer, and in the interests of Thai cricket, we
need to lock him up before his testosterone levels put him off playing the
game. Further, he is an ever-improving keeper. I think he has the capability
to stand up to the medium pacers. This would make him an extraordinarily
good player.

Tom played an important role, if unorthodox, in the stand
with Ismail, who I think played really well. He built his innings, received
the hostility from Maki, and dealt with it.
Above all he was patient, but hit the bad ball well. His cover drive off
Maki was, I thought, the shot of the day. On a relatively slow outfield it
simply screamed to the boundary. He also plays straight.
His bowling was also pretty good, 3/16. He took a catch. But, it was his
batting today that sealed his side’s win. And, ladies (Helen, the scorer),
and gentlemen of CMCC he plays in the spirit of the game. My man of the
match - Ismail.
Note: There is plenty of cricket to watch as well this January as the ACC
are holding the Under 19 challenge cup in Chiang Mai. Come along and watch,
as this should be a very high standard of cricket with national pride at
stake and if your available please help out with scoreboards etc.
