Tamarine flies
the flag into last 16
Martin Bilsborrow
Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn made it into the fourth round of
Wimbledon for seventh time in her career on Saturday after defeating New
Zealand’s Marina Erakovic in 3 sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-4). At the age of 31,
Tamarine was the oldest female competitor left in the tournament at the time
of going to press and gave away more than 11 years to her opponent on
Saturday.
“It’s a good feeling to be back in the second week of a grand slam,”
Tamarine told reporters afterwards. “I’m just having fun and enjoying all my
matches. Maybe when you are my age you are happier as a tennis player than
when you’re in the 20s. I’m happy right now even if I’m the oldest in the
draw.
The Thai star, who has never made it to the quarter finals of a grand slam
event, but is currently going through a resurgence of form after capturing
the Ordina Open in Holland two weeks ago, was due to take on world ranked
No. 2 player Jelena Jankovic on Monday. Yankovic survived an injury scare on
Saturday when she fell and twisted her knee but was a doubtful starter for
her match on Monday. She was due to go for an MRI scan prior to taking on
the Thai No. 1.
