as Mekong River bursts its banks

Four provinces severely affected

Concerned residents seen viewing the collapsed Ping River bank near their homes. Although the Ping has not flooded yet, there are fears concerning the effect of higher than normal amounts of rainfall in the area.

Ex PM Thaksin skips bail; flies into exile

Not unexpectedly, ex PM Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife, (recently given a three year jail sentence for tax fraud, but allowed out on bail pending an appeal), left China a day early on August 10 and flew discreetly into exile in London. The couple, who had the Thai court’s permission to visit China for the opening of the Olympic Games, but had been ordered to return Sunday 11, had left Thailand with a large amount of luggage, fuelling rumours that they would not be returning.

Shangri-La Hotel hosts East Meets West Cardiology 2008

From August 9-11, the second in a series of annual conferences entitled “East meets West Cardiology” was held at the Shangri-La Hotel. Over 500 delegates from across Asia were present, as were representatives from Australia and from the Mayo Clinic and New York University.

Electrifying Nissan

Nissan has indicated its intention of being at the forefront of electric power technology, stating that they will release an all-electric vehicle in 2010. This looks like being a race between GM and Nissan, as both have said that their electric vehicles will be in the showrooms in 2010, but don’t stand hopefully outside their new car showrooms on Sukhumvit Road. It will be a while before we get them in Thailand.
