A briefing for local business people and government officials was held on
September 3, 2012 when Surapon Kiatchaiyakorn, Chairman of the Advisory
Committee on Foreign Affairs for Parliament visited Chiang Mai and discussed the
work of his sub-committee on Thai-Chinese-ASEAN relations and the upcoming ASEAN
Economic Community (AEC).
Chiang Mai Deputy Governor Ritthipong Techapun and representatives of the
Governors of Lamphun, Lampang and Mae Hong Son attended the briefing on the
preparation for the North to integrate into the AEC.
He added that the private private sector has an important role in pushing
Thailand into the AEC effectively. Chiang Mai should be promoted as an aviation
hub for the region with connecting land transport routes as well. He added that
they should accelerate and promote tourism, agriculture, and education and to
ensure that Thailand can step into the AEC and achieve the vision of ASEAN
together with the 9 member nations.
