Zouk Flash Mob hits Chiang Mai

The group danced in front of a crowd gathered near the Watson’s at Kad Suan Kaew shopping center.

By Shana Kongmun
We’ve all seem the videos of flash mobs in various areas of the world suddenly breaking out dancing away. Well, Chiang Mai got a taste of that as residents joined in the International Zouk Flash Mob Day on September 16 when more than 3000 people from 37 countries in 95 cities joined together to perform the Brazilian dance “zouk” to the song “Rehab” by Rihanna. Dancers who participated in the dance were proud to join together with others around the world to show that dance is the common language to promote cooperation and create a positive energy.

The idea of an international Zouk flash mob day of dance came to Perth, Australia native Bob Kelly, who originally was inspired to do a zouk flash mob in Brisbane. Inspired, he and fellow dancers Alison Sandi and Audrey Isautier decided to go big and organize a global flash mob dancing the zouk. A Facebook page was set up on June 1 and by September 16 more than 3000 people took part including a group here in Chiang Mai that danced at 3 Kings Monument, Icon Plaza, Kad Suan Kaew and at CMU. The dancers drew watchers and people videoing with their phones as the zouk flash mob was carried around the world.

The members of the Association were in Chiang Mai to meet with various organizations and increase ties between the two cities. The members attended a cocktail party under the theme of Loy Krathong at the RatiLanna Riverside Spa Resort during their visit. Vice Governor Ritthipong Techapun joined them as a guest of honor for the evening.
