The Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) plans to
accelerate Thailand as a conventions and meetings center with their new project
“Year of MICE 2013”. MICE stands for Meetings Incentives Conventions and
Exhibitions and Chiang Mai’s new Convention Center is key to the plan.
The TCEB led more than 80 people in a Meetings Day to visit
the Chiang Mai International Convention Center to study it for its opening next
year. Wijaya Sunthornsaratun, Director of the TCEB meeting industry, said after
the event that more than 45 operators were interested and that more requests for
information on the new Center were coming in from overseas.
Tongchai Srimada TCEB committee Acting Director reported that
Chiang Mai Province and TCEB signed an MoU agreement to promote Chiang Mai as a
MICE city in 2009. Since then the TCEB has worked to build up the MICE industry
in Chiang Mai, he noted that the province has great potential to build up its
MICE industry. In 2011 Thailand saw nearly 60,000 visitors attend conventions.
The Office of the National Economic and Social Development asked the Cabinet
to name 2013 as the Year of MICE for Chiang Mai as the Convention Center is
slated to be ready for conventions and meetings in 2013.
