Please alert readers to overcharging in 7 Eleven stores. I’ve had a feeling
of this in the past but didn’t give it much consideration. Now I feel it is
widespread and not accidental.
Two days ago I got shortchanged 100 Baht on a 1,000 Baht note and tonight
the assistant rang up 163 Baht when it should have been 113 Baht. There was
no explanation offered and I received the refund.
I recommend readers to take note of the prices of what they are buying and
be prepared to challenge the bill.
Complaint about TRUE sms
I would like to write in to warn Chiang Mai Mail readers about a problem I have
had with my TRUE pre-paid mobile phone service. I changed to TRUE and started
receiving sms messages from TRUE or from some company they sold my number to. I
was being charged to receive these messages, or perhaps TRUE signed me up for
some service. But I never requested these sms messages and yet each time my
balance would go down.
Luckily I checked my balance before it hit zero! I went into their office in Kad
Suan Kaew where they said they would cancel the messages but refused to refund
me the full amount. They would not issue a receipt for the small amount they did
refund me (48 baht!).
They told me if I had a complaint I had to talk to the head office in Bangkok!
AIS has a main office in town, why doesn’t TRUE?
So, readers beware, you may be getting charged for those unwanted sms messages
you receive. Check your balance and get it stopped!
Visiting the Karen girl
who was tortured
An update on the little Karen girl who has been given the name “Air”, to hide
her identity. The Karen people are originally from Burma and Air’s parents were
illegal immigrants in Thailand, they worked the rice fields and were very cheap
labour for Thai farmers. It was five years ago when their seven year old
daughter was kidnapped, they knew who the kidnappers were and went several times
to get their daughter back. The millionaire couple who had “Air” told her
parents to leave their property or they would call the police.
When Air was in the millionaire couples place she was made to take care of the
animals as they owned a pet care business, if she ever did anything wrong she
was beaten, put in a dog’s cage and had boiling water poured over her. Once they
cut her ear lobes off with scissors, a delightful couple as you can imagine! She
did escape once and was taken back to the millionaires by the police.
The second time she escaped she was trying to catch a cat that was running away
from the property and climbed over the wall to get it, then she realised she had
escaped again, luckily a neighbor found her and took her straight to a Child
Care Centre, it was the people there that made the Police take action. The
millionaire couple were arrested and released on bail, what a surprise that
was,(I don’t think). They withdrew their millions from the bank and have not
been seen since, doesn’t that amaze you?
Last Saturday I rode the 350 kilometres to Kamphaengphet to take some gifts for
Air, at the local hospital the receptionist and a senior nurse helped me to find
out where the Care Home was.I was also helped with some students who asked me to
follow them on their motorcycles to take me to the Care Home.
To be honest I did not expect to meet Air but just wanted to leave the gifts and
show her someone loved and thought about her. I met a young man at the Home and
he gave me a glass of cold water and asked me to wait as Air was at a Temple
with four other girls from the Care Centre and they would be back shortly.
I presented her with a big Teddy Bear and other gifts I had for her, and this
might seem silly but I fell in love with all of them, including the big man who
drives the care home bus and the young man who sincerely cares for the kids. It
was a day I will never forget. In the photos Air’s face is hidden for her own
protection, she is beautiful but the latest report is that the scars will be
with her for life and that the muscles in her left arm that is fused to the
upper part of her side will never be one hundred percent.
The worrying thing is will her future be assured after all the fuss has died
down, I am an old guy and until I die I will try to keep in touch with everyone
concerned in her case. The Thai Government said they will foot the bill for her
medical costs, but will that be the end of it? Probably yes!
So, that’s the story for now. Please google her story to find out the whole
