Twilight and Music in Chiang Rai

By Jai Pee
Make a date in your diaries now! Sunday 29th December 2013, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the beautiful Villa Darakorn in Chiang Rai: this year’s unique and wonderful Fifth Annual Twilight Concert. This remarkable and splendid event will feature the Chiang Rai Youth Orchestra, the Silapakorn Repertory Wind Ensemble together with ‘Le Petit Band’ creating a total of 65 orchestral musicians, and a range of soloists including a pianist, oboist, and violinist, plus two young Chiang Rai Youth Orchestra violinists. Adding to the pleasure of the event will be a well-known local vocalist and two younger promising vocalists from Bangkok.
The concert will bring quality musical culture to the Chiang Rai community. Net proceeds of this charity concert will be donated to children in need of help in the province of Chiang Rai, a very worthy cause indeed. This year the concert will be a special occasion based on the theme “Magic Beam” – the title of one H.M. The King’s famous songs. The program will include music by Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Brahms and Peter Warlock in an exciting mixture of symphonic and concerto pieces with a range of popular and Thai cultural songs including several by His Majesty The King.
This event is a fabulous one – from 2:00pm to 3:00pm you are cordially invited to join a pre-concert guided tour of the botanical garden. Plant specialists will accompany you to have a close look at plants and trees around Villa Darakorn’s botanical garden (this is free of charge). Many of these species are quite rare and a significant number will be in full bloom. Following the tour the first part of the concert performed by the wind ensemble will take place in the afternoon sunshine; after a short interval for light snacks and drinks, the Magic Beam part of the festivities will start as the sun sinks behind the mountains and trees and the arena becomes a wonderful setting full of lanterns and fairy lights, ending just after 7:00pm.
The Villa and its botanical garden were built 24 years ago in 1989 by Sawet Piamphongsant, a former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in the era of Prime Minister M.R. Seni Pramoj. Sawet, father of the current owners and your hosts Suphavit and his wife Pasinee, was an enthusiastic garden lover who, during his life time, collected flowering plants and exotic plant species from all over the world and planted them at this private botanical garden. In winter time the ambient temperatures are two degrees Celsius below those in the city of Chiang Rai, and a variety of plants are in blossom. What could be a more beautiful and unique way of helping close the old year and at the same time welcoming in the New Year than this? Beautiful plants – a unique setting – and young musicians playing as the sun sets!
Tickets are 350 baht (students 220 baht) available from the Doi Chang Coffee Shop in Chiang Mai on 053-752-918; from the conductor of the orchestra Pramet on 086-732-5292 or from Suphavit on 089-497-7166; further information is available from the orchestra’s website page: www. or The villa is located 7 km from the Khon Kon Waterfall junction in Tambon Mae Kon, Amphoe Muang, Chiangrai 57000.
