Exquisite éclairs at Le Meridien
Le Meridien Chiang Mai launched the hotel group’s
famed éclairs at the hotel on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 with media and local
residents there to try their hand at filling and decorating éclairs made on
site. Executive Chef Filippo Morelli gave a demonstration on crafting a
delicious éclair before the group set to making their own. The éclairs on offer
range from traditional chocolate covered to a delicious passion fruit, mango and
others. The éclairs are now available at Le Meridien every day.
Chiang Mai brides can now

Famed for her luxurious and intricate wedding gowns and cocktail
dresses, many a Chiang Mai bride will no longer have to make the trek to
Aunchalee’s boutique in Sala Daeng in Bangkok but can view, order, and
fit a fabulous wedding dress in Chiang Mai with the opening of the new
Aunchalee Boutique in Promenada Resort Shopping Mall. The original
Aunchalee started in 2001 and at first sold gowns from a French bridal
label before Aunchalee embarked on developing the Aunchalee collection.

Brainstorming on UNESCO Creative City development

chaired a seminar on developing Chiang Mai as a UNESCO Creative City.
The Chiang Mai Provincial Administration (PAO) recently held a
brainstorming forum on the drive to become a Creative City under UNESCO.
The seminar, “The Drive Chiang Mai to be a Creative City of Crafts and
Folk Arts of UNESCO” was chaired by President of the PAO Boonlert
Buranupakorn and was held at the Chiang Mai City Arts & Culture Center
on August 2, 2014.
The forum was organized to bring together organizations to exchange
views and brainstorm on guidelines on the integration of creative city
development. The development of Chiang Mai as a creative city and the
drive to apply for UNESCO status as a City of Crafts and Folk Arts
needed to see community organizations and government agencies form
partnerships towards the goal.
The President said that the PAO is working in coordination with the
Municipality and the Faculty of Fine Arts at Chiang Mai University to
study the feasibility and potential of the city as the UNESCO City of
Craft and Folk Arts. Preliminary data from studies in the area of the
city and 8 districts by Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University
found Craft and Folk Art majors from a total 87 sources. Socioeconomic,
environmental benefits will also include the development of creative
industries and new tourism opportunities for visitors to understand the
culture of the city.
He noted that the Chiang Mai is a city rich in cultural heritage and the
center of the Lanna Kingdom for the past 700 years. Other cities that
have been declared as Creative Cities of Craft and Folk Art include
Kanazawa in Japan, Santa Fe in the United States and Incheon in South

International Rotary Club joins Amigo Vision to provide eyeglasses for the needy

Migrant workers and refugees living in Chiang Mai were given the
gift of sight recently when Amigo Vision and Chiang Mai International Rotary
Club held eye tests at Thai Freedom House recently. From the elderly lady
who broke into a huge grin when the right prescription was obtained and she
could finally read again to the girl readying for college who had her
prescription updated to the little girl whose new glasses means a better
chance at school, the two nights in a row saw Free Bird Cafe filled with
people who could not afford glasses and who often desperately needed them.
In addition to the few whose vision was seriously impaired and required
glasses to function were the aging parents and grandparents of students at
the school who were thrilled to receive reading glasses that meant they
could once again read to their children.

Over two days the teams tested 80 people with 50 people requiring glasses of
some kind, ten of those needing more than mild reading glasses. The children
at the school were also tested and a few of them needed glasses as well, but
as per the usual rates only a few of the kids needed glasses.
Hoya Co. kindly donated the lenses and Chiang Mai International Rotary Club
paid for the grinding of those lenses while the huge supply of glasses came
from Amigo Vision. The need for frames is huge as more and more communities,
both remote and local, are visited by teams of Rotary members from Chiang
Mai and around the North. Anyone with access to an optician who has a supply
of older frames is encouraged to contact Chiang Mai International Rotary
Club. The next event will take place in Mae Hong Son over Christmas where 40
schools are expected to take part. Rotary clubs from Chiang Mai will travel
north to meet with Mae Hong Son clubs for this herculean effort.

Mae Hong Son looks to boost trade with China
traveled to Mae Hong Son recently to sign trade agreements and increase

The Mae Hong Son Governor met recently with Chinese businesspeople
from Kunming and the ASEAN - China Economy and Trade Promotion Association,
and officials from state enterprises in China to negotiate on co-investing,
boost border trade and increase direct flights. The group had already
visited Phrae and Nan for similar agreements.
Mae Hong Son Governor Surapon Panasampon said that the group of investors
was interested in every dimension of the local economy; from trade to
tourism, education, e-commerce, spa businesses and construction as well as
the improvement of logistics to ease the transport of goods to China.
Governor Surapon said that although Mae Hong Son is a small province it is
ready to boost its economy, trade and tourism. The province not only has its
natural and adventure travel tourist attractions, but also borders Myanmar
for 500 kilometers and currently has five points where people are permitted
to enter temporarily. The commercial value of the Mae Hong Son’s border
trade is valued at 400 million baht and is expected to grow after the
opening of the AEC next year.
The plan is to boost border trade by opening permanent border points in
order to reduce cost of transport to Myanmar’s hub. Also, they approved to
implement new air routes from Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son to some towns in
Myanmar such as Naypyidaw, Mandalay, and Loikaw.
“The association aims to promote trade, cultural investment, tourism, health
and aesthetic business between Thai and ASEAN, and ASEAN and China. And in
the near future, our mission will cover boosting tourism and trade of Mae
Hong Son,” said Mr. Wichit Yang, the president of ASEAN-China Economy &
Trade Promotion Association.
“As Mae Hong Son’s topography is similar to Yunnan’s, I can guarantee that
road and tunnel construction in the province will be no problem,” said Mr.
Zhu Shufu, the civil engineering director of China Yunnan Sunny Road &
Bridge Co., Ltd.
Supoj Klinpraneet, Chairman of Mae Hong Son Private Sector Cooperation
Committee said that Mae Hong Son, particularly Pai and Muang district, had
seen the growth of Chinese tourists for the past two years, with the number
of Chinese visitors growing 60%. China and the province’s Phuklon spa
products recently signed a cooperation agreement over the spa business. He
added that he would continue to push the province’s products so that they
become more well-known and increase awareness of Mae Hong Son.
