Mothers from around Chiang Mai honored on Mother’s Day

The day started early as Governor Suriya Prasatbuntitya and
government officials made merit early morning by offering food and alms to
monks at Tha Pae Gate in honor of HM Queen Sirikit on her birthday on August
12, 2014. The day, also designated Mother’s Day to honor all mothers across
Thailand saw family gather together at temples to honor their own mothers as
Suriya Prasatbuntitya honors the portrait of HM the Queen at the official
ceremony on the morning of August 12, 2014.
The official government ceremony
honoring Her Majesty the Queen was held at Chiang Mai University Convention
Center at 9:09 a.m. when leading officials of the province, including the
Governor, the Commander of the 33rd Army Camp, Region 5 Police, and the
diplomatic corps as represented by Japanese Consul General Akihiko Fujii,
the dean of the diplomatic corps, offering alms to the abbots of leading
temples around Chiang Mai. Governor Suriya then offered a “Phan phum” or a
floral arrangement set in the shape of a lotus to honor HM the Queen before
speaking about the Queen and her dedication to the Thai people.

The Governor handed out plaques to the
award winning Mothers from around Chiang Mai Province including Doi Saket,
Mae On, Saraphi and others.
The Chiang Mai Municipality held a candlelight ceremony in the evening to
honor HM the Queen at Tha Pae Gate. Booths were set up with craftspeople
demonstrating their skills that Her Majesty worked so hard to promote to the
world and to popularize among Thai citizens as well. Chiang Mai Mayor
Tussanai Buranupakorn led the candle lighting ceremony in front of the
portrait of HM the Queen before leading the crowd in singing the Royal
Anthem. The Best Mothers from around the city were also honored that
evening, with many local people and organizations offering Phan Phum to the
portrait of the Queen as well.
Mother’s Day was changed to August 12 in 1976 to commemorate the birthday of
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Mother of all Thai people.

Most Chiang Mai residents don’t think to equate Chiang Rai with wine
but that would be a mistake as a visit to chat with the knowledgeable and
funny Eknarin “Max” Thammaraks who is more than happy to sit down and talk
about wines in an approachable way.
A one year anniversary party saw more than 70 people attend, most of them
from Chiang Rai but a strong Chiang Mai contingent showed up for the
celebrations as well. The evening featured sparkling wine from Collavini
Wines, a Bordeaux Blanc from Chateau La Gravelle and a silver medal winner
from Chateau Du Barrailh – Graves. The wines were accompanied by the
delicious canapés from the kitchen at the Legend Resort and the charming
café style Wine Casa filled with people chatting and enjoying the wines.

Wine Casa at The Legend, Chiang Rai.
Max has been studying to be a sommelier
and his passion and knowledge are apparent, he is more than happy to talk
about the wines on offer, the why, the what and the how of it all. Wine Casa
is located inside The Legend Resort & Spa in Chiang Rai and a weekend away
from it all in Chiang Rai is all that more appealing because of the many
fine and yet reasonably priced wines that Max has lovingly chosen for his

Local favorite opens new branch in town

Long-standing Chiang Mai favorite Nasi Jumpru, the creation owners
Toey and Noom who named the Thai fusion restaurant after the Indonesian term
for mixed food, although technically nasi means rice, in this case it is
similar to the Thai as being referred to as a meal.
The new branch, the San Kamphaeng location remains in place, is conveniently
located in The Harbour and offers diners a cozy and intimate feel in what is
a rather spacious restaurant. Nasi Jumpru has been around for quite a few
years now starting at JJ Market before moving to the Meechoke Intersection
in a charming old style house. The new venue retains a charm and beauty that
goes with having two such creative owners in charge.
Friends, guests and well-wishers came to the grand opening at The Harbour on
Friday, August 8, 2014 where cocktails and canapes were served before the
ribbon was cut on the new restaurant and the guests then sat down for

The Game Sports Bar and Grill opened their newest branch in Chiang
Mai on Friday, August 15, 2014 with a bang, the large venue features a huge
projection screen TV that was featuring Australian rugby in the busy bar as
local expats and Thais lined up for the buffet and to enjoy a beer in the
traditional sports bar atmosphere.
Located in Kad Farang, the new bar is overseen by General Manager Andrew
(Dru) Garrity with the help of Damon Zane and features standard bar
favorites like burgers, hot dogs, and buffalo wings along with other dishes
like steaks and pork chops along with a good selection of domestic and
imported beers. Locals lined up to play pool on the Brunswick tables after
they polished off the buffet. The large flat screen TVs all around the venue
ensured everyone got their dose of sports along with the sports memorabilia
on the walls. The owner of a neighboring Muay Thai gym dropped in and gave
the bar a pair of gloves to hang from the walls, noting that these were a
much better quality glove. The owners of Kad Farang also joined the crowd
along with many Hang Dong residents as well as in-town friends and
well-wishers who came out for the opening.
The Game Sports Bar is open 7 days a week until 1 a.m. with a Happy Hour and
special Men’s Night on Thursdays and to make sure that local sports lovers
get their sports fix all the time, feature different sports all the time.
Local Hang Dong residents dropped in to enjoy a
beer and watch the rugby on the huge projection screen TV.
