Recent underachievers bounce back to form

It’s been a little while since Don Peterson, Grahame Curry and Peder Koch finished in the top three of a Royal League event, but they managed it in that order last Thursday week at the Chiang Mai Highlands Golf and Spa Resort.
On perfect greens that were a credit to Derek and his ground staff, Don secured victory with a solid 38 Stableford points. Playing off a handicap of 17, Don’s steady 18 points at the turn formed the foundation to a back nine consisting of five pars and 20 points.
Despite Grahame carding the lowest gross round of the day - 83 - his Stableford score of 37 wasn’t quite enough to catch Don.
“Two doubles on the front nine was my undoing,” said Grahame. “A schizophrenic putting display was the highlight/lowlight of the round. You have those days on the greens where the ones you should get you miss and the ones you do not expect to make hit the middle of the hole and seem to get swallowed.”
Overall, the scoring was far from impressive, with half the field handing in less than 30 points. Peder looked to be no exception to this when he recorded a dismal 10 points on the front nine. But he came back over the home stretch like Tiger Woods, with two birdies, three pars and 23 points to take third spot.
Meanwhile at Maejo Golf Club, Dennis Weorner claimed first prize in last Monday week’s Happy Bar Stds. stroke play tournament with a net score of 69. He was closely followed by Tom Ingham on 71.
Scoring was not so impressive the following Friday when Mark Johnston took the honours with a net 75.
Jim Cannon may have missed out on those two events, but his eclectic performance over the two days could see him land the title. While no one else managed to improve on their tally, Jim knocked two shots off his on Monday, with birdies on the 1st and 12th - where he chipped in from 30 yards.
After parring 8th on Friday, Jim now stands 4 strokes ahead of Tom Ingham with just two rounds left to play of the contest.
